How ion Calculates Rate of Improvement
Updated onArticleThere are generally two different methods for calculating Rate of Improvement from an academic sense.
- The simple model.
y=(x2 - x1) / w
- Where y = ROI, x2 = last data point, x1 = first data point, w = number of weeks between x2 and x1
- The problem with this method is it ignores fluctuations within the period between x2 and x1
- In the example below, the ROI calculated using this method would be 1.52. However this does not represent the actual growth of the student - as they didn't see a surge in test scores until the last three data points.

Understanding Intervention Trends
Updated onArticleOn a plan's intervention panel (bottom right corner) there is an indicator of a student's status in the intervention. One of five indicators will be displayed. This brief article will help you understand what they mean, and how we calculate them.
1) Unable to Determine Status
This status message is displayed when there is not enough data (progress monitoring data) that has happened within the timeline of the intervention to determine a status. It also is displayed when a goal has not been set for the skill.
2) Met or Exceeded Goal
When an intervention is locked, the last data point is evaluated to determine if it is at or above the score set in the active goal. If it is, the intervention is marked as "Met or Exceeded Goal."
3) Did Not Meet Goal
When an intervention is locked, the last data point is evaluated to determine if it is at or above the score set in the active goal. If it is not, the intervention is marked as "Did Not Meet Goal."
4) Trending Successful
Using a linear regression, a trend line for the progress monitoring data points during the intervention is plotted - and projected out to the date of the goal. If the trend line on the date of the goal is at or above the goal score on that date, the intervention will be marked as "Trending Successful."
5) Trending Successful
Using a linear regression, a trend line for the progress monitoring data points during the intervention is plotted - and projected out to the date of the goal. If the trend line on the date of the goal is below the goal score on that date, the intervention will be marked as "Trending Unsuccessful."
