Creating a Data Wall
There are two ways to create a data wall: (1) Use "new data walls" on the menu and (2) the "create" icon at the top of the ion screen.
Another way to create a dashboard is to use the icon at the top of the ion screen.
Click on the "+" icon and choose "Data Wall." The data wall will populate in the data wall editor. See the section on Naming and Choosing Scope for next steps.
Copying an existing data wall can be an efficient way to create a data wall if using most or some of the information in a new wall. More information on the editing process is found in the Data Wall Editor.
To copy a data wall, click on the copy icon. The data wall will populate in the data wall editor as a copy of the existing data wall in the user's personal scope (My Data Walls).
See the next section on Naming and Choosing Scope for next steps.
Copying a data wall will not change the existing data wall. All users have permissions to make a copy. Only those with ion district administrator access can edit or delete a data wall that is not in their own scope.
1. Name the wall.
When Naming a data wall, always click Save, not Enter. Clicking Enter will return an "error code." If this occurs, click the back browser button to return to the Data Wall Editor to continue.
When naming the wall, consider how any user will find the wall or search the wall using key words. For example, Grade 5 clarifies a grade level, and "Reading Grade 5" clarifies the type of information on the wall.
2. From the drop down, choose the scope.
See information below on scope and security.
3. Click Save.
4. When the wall has been saved, the name will appear at the top and the data wall builder / editor will populate. See Data Wall Editor to continue building the wall.
Wall Scope is defined as "the users or groups of users who have access to see a particular Data Wall." Walls can be assigned to three different scopes.
Scope vs Permissions: Scope allows access to see that a wall exists. Permission settings allow access to see students and information on the wall. For example, if I only have permissions to access elementary, I will see data walls exist for middle/high in the district scope, but if I access them, they will not fill with data.
Me
Walls defined in the "Me" scope are only available to be seen by the user who created the wall.
School
Walls defined in the "School" scope are available to any user who is assigned to the Currently Active School. Data Walls cannot be scoped to School when "All Schools" is selected.
District
Walls defined in the "District" scope are available to any user in the school district.
Security
Wall Scope does not determine what students are displayed on a wall. Instead, information displayed on a wall is a function of user permissions and school access.
For example, a user must be in the elementary school to access elementary school information. Additionally, user permissions may limit access to students on a roster vs all students in a school, or even limit access to certain information. To learn more about permissions, see Managing Permissions.
